This quick start covers the WorkForce Power Export (formerly SmartAPU): how to bring it online, run the 120V inverter and the electric air conditioning, charge it, and read the status indicator light.
How do you operate the WorkForce Power Export?
- Stop the vehicle, shift to Park or Neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Turn off the ignition and let the engine stop. Then turn the key forward to the ON position without starting the engine. This keeps accessories operating normally.
- Reset the Emergency Stop on the Control Panel: twist clockwise until the pushbutton returns to the OUT position.
- The status indicator turns green when the unit is operational.
How it powers the vehicle With the parking brake set, the vehicle in Run without the engine, and the Emergency Stop reset, the unit automatically supplies 13.6V DC export power to the vehicle batteries. When activated it supplies 48V DC to the electric A/C. The 120V receptacles require the inverter to be turned on.
How do you turn on the 120V receptacles (inverter)?
Press and briefly hold the INVERTER icon on the Touch Encoder to turn the inverter on. Confirm it is exporting 120VAC to the receptacles. To turn it off, press and briefly hold the INVERTER icon again.
How do you run the electric air conditioning?
Press and briefly hold the eA/C icon on the Touch Encoder to turn the electric A/C on, and again to turn it off. The electric A/C runs independently and does not require the inverter to be on.
How do you charge it?
Plug a 15-amp rated 120V extension cord into the charge inlet. The status light blinks blue and the Touch Encoder shows charging. From fully discharged, a typical charge takes about 5 to 6 hours depending on conditions.
WARNING Using an improperly rated cord can cause it to heat up, melt, or start a fire.

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn on the SmartAPU?
Park, set the brake, turn the key to ON without starting the engine, and reset the Emergency Stop by twisting it clockwise. The status light turns green when the unit is running.
Do I need the inverter on to use the air conditioning?
No. The electric A/C runs independently and does not require the inverter. Press the eA/C icon on the Touch Encoder to run it. The inverter is only needed for the 120V receptacles.
What does the blue light mean?
Solid blue means the unit sees the charging-requested signal, that is, the extension cord is plugged into the charge inlet. Flashing blue means it is actively charging.
What does a red light mean?
A red status light indicates a fault condition. Note the state and contact Viatec Customer Care.
How long does it take to charge?
From fully discharged, about 5 to 6 hours depending on conditions, using a 15-amp rated 120V extension cord.
